Year 2
My first time producing a special was so memorable. KCCI's work on Project CommUNITY pieces was one of the main reasons why I was interested in working there. We started working on it in the fall, and its importance became more timely with the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe versus Wade. I got to put my reporter hat back on for this too and write packages and breakouts on top of cold opens and prepro teases. Being able to dig into a topic this impactful and spend so much time pouring myself into it was an experience I'll never forget. I'll always be grateful to Tisia for trusting me with this.
Year 1
One of my favorite things about my first year at KCCI was how many opportunities I had to get creative with cold opens. These are a few of my favorites!
My year on the morning show provided a lot of chances to make my reporters and third anchor stand out. Whether it's using the studio in a different ways, incorporating cross shots or building up team coverage with Hearst's Washington Bureau. One time I was also about to include our meteorologist when our reporter's story centered around planting season.
Right at the end of my first year on the morning show two women were shot and killed in a church parking lot in Ames. The shooter then took his own life. Our nightside team had a field anchor and reporter there, and it was decided the morning show would do the same. This closely followed the shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde and Tulsa, so we knew people were already on edge and would want a different level of attention on this local shooting from us. At this point we had switched our workflow from producing half hours to having a creative and power producer. This week I was the creative producer, so I was in charge of our coverage of the shooting this morning.
I didn’t get to produce on the day of the insurrection, but here are some things I’m proud of from the first anniversary. The first is a quick "sights & sounds" wrap I used to setup my anniversary coverage, and the second is the cold open I wrote for the 6:30 half hour.
